As per the reports from The Information, Apple has delayed the release of its upcoming iPhone Air, which was earlier scheduled for the fall of 2026, because the present model did not sell as much as they hoped for.
The iPhone Air which was released a couple of months back was introduced as the ‘lighter’ and ‘more compact’ smartphone in Apple’s flagship collection. Though it was a light device it had its downsides like a smaller battery and a simpler camera system, which according to the analysts restricted its appeal to a broader audience.
Apple's quest to sell a minimalist smartphone has not drawn in the anticipated number of clients. Market observers say that poor sales have caused the company to reevaluate its product roadmap, thus, this is a rare case of even changing Apple's usually steady annual iPhone cycle.
The new iPhone Air by Apple in China had also to face regulatory issues. The company disclosed in October that pre-orders would not be accepted until local telecom operators obtained official clearance for eSIM services. The Air in China is provided only with eSIM capability, eliminating the physical SIM tray, which is in line with the eSIM trend in that the company is moving away from digital connectivity.
The iPhone Air comes with a 6.5-inch ProMotion 120Hz Super Retina XDR display, which provides peak brightness of 3,000 nits and well-attuned contrast for outdoor use. The company has furnished the device with Ceramic Shield 2 glass on both sides, and the company claims that it is more scratchproof and has better anti-reflective properties than the old versions.
At the core of the device, Apple’s A19 Pro chip is utilized, the same CPU that drives the iPhone 17 Pro series. The 6-core CPU and the 5-core GPU, each with their respective neural accelerators, allow for demanding tasks like AAA gaming and on-device AI functions, providing in total an up to three times peak GPU performance of the previous generation.
The cameras consist of a 48MP main sensor with 2x telephoto quality zoom and an 18MP front camera with focus that captures higher-quality selfies. Market analysts indicate that even though the Air provides flagship-level performance in a thin package, the reduction in battery and camera features might be the reason for its slow market acceptance.
